In the current work I have stripped away figurative narrative and focussed on the abstract elements that make a painting. I am interested in finding a balance between fields of colour in terms of quantity and intensity, but also at the edges where colours meet.
These compositions are structures made from blocks of colour,’ stackings’, building blocks continuously revised in the process of painting. There are no preconceived plans for these works: I need a starting point (for example, an exploration of different pigments of blue), an environment to work in and respond to (currently the studios in Benalla), and emotional baggage to fuel the creative process.
The darks in the works are there to create contrast, drama and intensity. They are a reflection on, or response to, emotions and feelings at that time; but subjective expression is mannered by an objective endeavour to find resolution within the painting.
Being an artist is a continuous process of challenging one’s visual language, of reinventing one’s art, of looking for new ways to express oneself. I am looking for images that make a statement, that declare an irrefutable right to exist. I am looking for paintings that surprise me.
